Middle East Tensions
Burcu Ozcelik, senior research fellow in Middle East security at the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi), told i: “Iran has long-range, high-precision missiles that make Israeli targets vulnerable, but it will be costly militarily for Iran if it deploys its already overstretched and sanctioned arsenal. It is possible that the Iranian front may attack Israeli military targets and critical national infrastructure, such as the ports of Haifa and Ashdod. The retaliation is likely to be a co-ordinated offensive operation conducted by the IRGC [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] and Iran-linked proxies, mainly Hezbollah, striking from southern Lebanon. Shia militias in Iraq and Syria and the Houthis in Yemen have also indicated preparedness to join a multi-front operation against Israel and US military assets.”
