Overview

Over the last NPT Review cycle, there has been an increased focus on diversity and inclusion within NPT implementation and review process, with a particular focus on gender. A number of working papers were submitted to the third Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Review Conference advancing recommendations for a better integration of gender analysis and promoting gender equality and meaningful representation into NPT implementation and review. Yet significant knowledge and implementation gaps remain – both on the subject of gender equality and gender analysis, as well as in relation to broader diversity and inclusion.

In an effort to further explore the role that diversity and inclusion considerations can play in strengthening the implementation of the NPT, the Royal United Services Institute’s Rebalancing Expertise in Defence and Security (REDS) initiative will be hosting a panel discussion that will examine the historical contributions of traditionally under-represented communities and perspectives to efforts on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, as well as ways in which we can better-integrate more diverse perspectives and experiences into non-proliferation and disarmament discussions, including in the upcoming NPT Review Conference.
