Jamie MacColl, a research fellow at the RUSI thinktank, said: “Since NotPetya, the more disruptive ops have been more limited.” A recent example of a more limited attack, according to MacColl, was the WhisperGate malware, which Microsoft detected in Ukraine in the middle of January. It was designed to look like ransomware, a virus that encrypts an organisation’s data, but without the unlock for payment mechanism that is a feature of such attacks.
