Even before the February invasion, the UK was at the forefront of European efforts to deter a Russian incursion. While France aimed to bridge divides with Russia, and Germany looked to stay neutral, Britain was unique in Europe in that it both warned of Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s hostile intentions toward its neighbour and had the military capabilities to help Ukraine, said Jack Watling, an expert on land warfare at the Royal United Services Institute, a think tank.
