Justin Bronk, research fellow for airpower at the Royal United Services Institute, said Russia had deployed many helicopters but only a small number of fixed-wing aircraft. "The Russians have about 310 modern fast jets in the western and southern military districts within striking distance of the combat areas of Ukraine," he said. "I don't fully understand why they haven't gone all out to suppress the remaining Ukranian medium-range air defences and the relatively small number of fighters and drones that are still operating."
