The IDF launched a crackdown on Hamas’s tunnels as part of a widespread military operation in 2014, destroying 32 tunnels, of which 14 directly linked to Israeli territory. Yet, as the Times reports, locating the tunnels proved difficult and destroying them was equally challenging. Dr Jack Watling, a senior research fellow in land warfare at the Royal United Services Institute, highlighted that such challenges remain: The IDF has been mapping these tunnels for a long time, using intelligence to understand where they are, using special sensors to monitor digging and other activity. But their understanding of exactly what’s where will be limited."
