Richard Osgood and Richard Bennett join us to explain how the archaeology of military landscapes can help unearth new details of historical life in military service, and how heritage and archaeology can be used as a recovery pathway for veterans and for wounded, injured or sick personnel (WIS).

Richard Osgood is a senior archaeologist, who works across one of Britain’s richest archaeological landscapes – Salisbury Plain. His organisation, Operation Nightingale, works in collaboration with Breaking Ground Heritage, founded by Dickie Bennett. The panellists discuss how heritage and archaeological experiences across the defence training estate, for veterans and WIS personnel, are used as a medium to promote wellbeing and assist recovery.

Speakers

Richard Osgood MBE joined the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, a part of the UK Ministry of Defence, in 2004 and has led the archaeology team for several years. He is Founder of Operation Nightingale, an initiative that uses archaeological fieldwork to aid the recovery of wounded veterans.

Richard Bennett is Founder of Breaking Ground Heritage, a project that helps those who are suffering from mental or physical ill health to recognise their true value. A PhD Researcher at Solent University, he previously served in the Royal Marines. He is an Associate Fellow of RUSI.
