Tigers Show Off European Capabilities in Mali

The multinational MINUSMA and French Barkhane deployments to Mali involve the use of several indigenous European platforms, particularly the Eurocopter Tiger. Therefore, they represent a useful opportunity to evaluate some aspects of European expeditionary capabilities

While the Eurocopter Tiger has previously been deployed in both Afghanistan and Libya, Mali is the only state in which the Tiger has operated entirely under European control, as part of an almost purely European deployment. In Mali, the Tiger undertakes the lion’s share of rotary-wing air support missions.

Since its 2013 inception, the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) has earned an unenviable reputation as the world’s most dangerous peacekeeping mission. By the end of 2016 118 peacekeepers have been killed in Mali, with two-thirds of this number having lost their lives as a result of direct enemy action.
