Just like extreme manoeuvrability in a turning fight and the quest for ever greater speed, hiding an aircraft from radar returns will eventually be superseded by other approaches to survivability. Potential alternative approaches are already under development

The US Air Force’s F-22 Raptor is undoubtedly the most lethal and survivable fighter aircraft in the skies and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. However, since the F-117 Nighthawk pioneered radar-evading technologies on a fighter-sized airframe as a means of penetrating hostile defences in the Gulf War in 1991, Russia and China have been well aware of the physics problem which they have to solve, and have been working hard on means to ‘uncloak’ American stealth jets.
