Biography
Sir Rob Wainwright is the Group Chief Information Security Officer of UBS. His career experience spans over 35 years across multiple areas of national security, law enforcement and risk management, in both the public and private sectors.Â
Prior to joining UBS in 2023, Rob was Senior Partner at Deloitte for 5 years, advising the Supervisory and Executive Boards of several global clients, primarily in the fields of cyber and financial crime.
Between 2009 and 2018, Sir Rob served as the Executive Director of Europol, leading the transformation of the agency into a world-class security institution. Today Europol is the primary intelligence-sharing and operational coordination centre in Europe, connecting over 1,000 law enforcement agencies and supporting almost 50,000 cross-border investigations each year against transnational threats from crime and terrorism. Rob led the establishment of the European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) in 2013 and the European Counter Terrorism Centre in 2016, both of which have become key pillars in Europe’s response to more serious and complex security threats facing citizens and businesses today. He also expanded Europol’s global footprint, securing cooperation agreement with national agencies in over 20 countries outside the EU, including the United States.
Under Sir Rob’s leadership Europol has pioneered the use of data and technology in new ways to better identify and respond to cross-border criminal and terrorist activity, developing transformational systems and networks that have significantly enhanced Europol’s information reach and operational impact. Europol now carries the reputation of being a major innovator in the global security community.
Over the last 15 years Sir Rob helped to establish and leads many public-private partnership security initiatives, including through the World Economic Forum on cyber issues and the Institute of International Finance on efforts to improve the global anti-money laundering regime.
Earlier in his career, Sir Rob occupied several positions in the UK’s intelligence and law enforcement communities, including the post of Director International of the Serious Organised Crime Agency between 2006 and 2009.
He is a graduate of the London School of Economics (1989), an honorary fellow with the University of Exeter and University of Cardiff, and an honorary professor with the University of Nottingham.
Sir Rob was knighted in 2018 for services to policing and security.
He was born in Wales in 1967 and is married with three children.
Transatlantic Response to Illicit Finance Taskforce Member
Thoughts on the Taskforce:
The global system to fight financial crime is not effective and requires serious reform efforts. That can only happen by activating strong partnerships across multiple communities and geographies. Leveraging the extraordinary influence and reach of RUSI this new taskforce can play a vital role in making that happen.
