The 162nd “Steel Formation” division and 98th Airborne division have been stationed on Gaza’s border for several weeks, awaiting the order to advance while the rest of the Palestinian territory has been largely vacated of Israeli troops. “They’ve more or less withdrawn from Gaza for the last six weeks or so,” said Professor Michael Clarke, a defence analyst and the former director of the Royal United Services Institute, a think tank.
