The West needs a champion to face enemies of democracy

Michael Clarke, former director- general of the Royal United Services Institute, says in coming decades this could become the first or second most used trade route in the world and will need to be protected. The problem, as he puts it, is that these Arctic routes are opening up on Russia’s side, giving Moscow “natural advantages to exploit it and to stop other people exploiting it”.
