Dr Thomas Withington, an associate fellow and expert in electronic warfare at the Royal United Services Institute, said the disruption of satellite navigation systems was becoming more common. “Ostensibly what the Russians are trying to do is protect their own assets in these areas, primarily to protect deployments, bases, troop concentrations and even strategic targets within Russia against satellite navigation-guided weapons,” he said. He said Moscow was keen to degrade weapons that used the US GPS system to locate their targets.
