In return for supplying troops Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s supreme leader, is thought to be receiving access to Moscow’s advanced military technology, as well as food, resources and useful exposure to warfare. “It’s always useful to blood ordinary soldiers because there is a great importance to having real combat experience,” said Professor Mark Galeotti, senior associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute think tank. “It gives them, but more importantly their officer corps, the chance to see what modern 21st-century war really looks like and take those lessons back home.”
