Dr Paul Hollinshead, chief executive of the Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) — better known as Porton Down — said the sophistication of directed-energy weapons was “advancing”. “We will absolutely see this technology in the battlespace sooner than we think,” he told the Royal United Services Institute land warfare conference. “It provides cheaper countermeasures to swarming drones and other weapons through either sensor damage, incapacitation or destruction.”
