The main thing to note is that actually this has been going on for nine years not one. Obviously combat operations have increased significantly in the past 12 months, but this is a war that has very complex origins. Ultimately I think that the Russian assumptions of Ukraine's will to fight and also the fact that their political objectives were not translatable into military objectives has meant that once Russian's Plan A failed they had no plan B because they hadn't thought that far ahead...."
