Charlie Parton, a former diplomat who spent 22 years working in China, said that it was an essential step to combat Chinese coercion and espionage. Parton, a senior associate fellow at the think tank Rusi, said that the economic impact of designating China in this way was being exaggerated. He said that “investment isn’t a charity” and China would continue to trade with the UK if the market and prices were in the right place.
