For years, the British military has taken more and more risk against its future. In this way Prime Ministers have avoided accountability for an under-resourced foreign policy because the Ministry of Defence has fulfilled its mission. The Treasury has balanced the books, even while its refusal to allow budget to carry over between years, or properly fund programmes in year, has essentially hollowed out Britain’s ability to defend itself. Now the consequences are about to become unavoidable, because Britain has gifted a large proportion of 3 (UK) Division’s equipment to Ukraine and what is left is worn out, while the threat that the British Army is committed to deter is becoming manifest as Moscow grinds its way westwards.
