UK-Russia Security Dialogue
This Dialogue provides a forum for experts, academics, and political observers to discuss sensitive security, geopolitical and climate related questions in an open and direct way.
Since 2016, RUSI has coordinated a UK-Russia Security Dialogue co-hosted with the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), a think tank based in Moscow.
In the context of a bilateral relationship that has become increasingly characterised by tension and a lack of trust, the UK and Russia still face security, geopolitical, and environmental challenges that require joint consideration or, at the very least, could be better addressed more effectively through coordination.
The Dialogue format provided a forum for experts, academics, and opinion formers to discuss sensitive security questions and to identify constructive ideas for UK-Russia policy engagement at an official level.
The planned dialogue activities have now been suspended.
Project outputs
The current project runs from 2021-2022, facilitating a series of roundtable discussions in three streams:
- arms control, strategic stability and space;
- foreign policy in the Middle East and North Africa;
- climate change.
Â
The project facilitates joint publications in each stream. Russian and UK participants publish short joint articles on thematic issues, reflecting some of ideas discussed in the roundtable sessions. These articles can be found below. The project also includes a series of podcasts, also linked below, exploring the themes raised in the dialogues by UK and Russian participants to the dialogues.
The most recent final report for the 2019-2020 Dialogue series can be found below, which highlighted the most salient discussion points from the roundtables. The final reports are circulated widely in the media in both countries following publication.
