Episode 9: Living with Uncertainty: The Assumptions Underpinning Chinese Nuclear Strategy
Assessments of China’s nuclear doctrine and retaliatory capabilities differ significantly, with scholars debating both the robustness of China’s nuclear arsenal and the strategic logic underpinning its development. Part of the reason for this is a degree of strategic mirror imaging, which obscures the distinctive ways in which different states understand concepts such as deterrence and strategic sufficiency.
In this adversarial studies lecture, Professor Wu Riqiang will outline his recent work on the survivability of China’s nuclear arsenal, future trends in its development and the idiosyncratic strategic logic underpinning China’s force structure and posture. The event is chaired by Dr Sidharth Kaushal, Research Fellow at RUSI.
