The Duke of Wellington Medal for Military History: Call for Submissions

Endowed by the Duke of Wellington, the medal aims to reward on an annual basis the best English language writing on military history, interpreted widely to include the role of the armed forces, the conduct of wars, and the impact of conflict on nations and societies, over any period up to the present day.

The winning entry will be decided by a Board of Judges, composed of the following:

  • Professor Michael Clarke, former Director-General of RUSI (Chair)
  • Professor Beatrice Heuser, Glasgow University
  • Professor Sir Hew Strachan FRHistS, St Andrews University
  • Lord Sumption FRHistS
  • The Duke of Wellington

Eligibility criteria:

  • All entries must be submitted by 31 October 2020
  • The book must have been published in the year 2020. Books that are due to be published after the submission deadline can be submitted as a pdf via julianas@rusi.org
  • Military history is widely interpreted to include the conduct and course of wars in any geographical area and of any time period, the role of the armed forces, the impact of the war on combatants as well as civil society, the role of intelligence, etc.
  • Books published by any living author, regardless of nationality, age, or gender, are welcome to enter the competition.
  • Sponsors and judges of the medal as well as their families, and current RUSI staff and their families, and previous winners of the Medal for a period of less than two years are not eligible.

Previous winners include:

  • Dr Jonathan Fennell, Fighting the People’s War: The British and Commonwealth Armies and the Second World War
  • Professor Helen Parr, Our Boys: The Story of a Falklands Paratrooper
  • John Hussey, Waterloo: The Campaign of 1815
