In partnership with BAE Systems, UK PONI is pleased to host a seminar that will take an unclassified look at nuclear fuel cycle and weapons technology, before considering the significance of both programmes in political terms.
One of the first acts of the next Government will be publication of a Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR), outlining the UK’s defence policy in the years ahead. With the life cycle of the UK’s existing fleet of Vanguard submarines having already been extended, the opportunity to postpone a decision on full renewal of the Trident system is limited.
The 1958 Mutual Defence Agreement (MDA) that provides the foundation for ongoing UK-US nuclear warhead collaboration is due to be reviewed and possibly extended this year. UK PONI will host two former practitioners from either side of the Atlantic to discuss the 1958 MDA and its role in domestic and international nuclear debates.
