RLMH News - Library Update
It’s been a busy few months in the RUSI Library of Military History. To keep you abreast of recent developments here is a quick update on all the changes in the Library.
By Laura Dimmock-Jones, Librarian
Opening times
The Library is generally open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when the Librarian is on site. We will always do our best to accommodate member’s needs on these days. Whilst the main Library isn’t always available we can still help you access the collection in a number of ways:
- Issuing books and leaving them at reception
- Dealing with enquiries by email or by phone
- Photocopying and scanning (within the rules designated by copyright) articles, chapters and sending them by post or email
Reading room
In addition to the measures above we now have a functioning Library and Archive Reading Room with a desk space for one reader. This space will always be available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays by appointment. If you have checked the catalogue and know which books or records you would like to see you can email the Librarian to book a slot in the Reading Room. Your items will be waiting for you on your arrival.

Rare Books, Archive and Special Collection store
All of the Institute’s Rare Books, Archive and Special Collections material have now been moved to our on-site store. This means that all of these collections are now more readily accessible for research and study. The collection includes books dating back to 1700, records of the RUSI Museum, photographs, journals, letters, glass slides and more. The Rare Books are all catalogued and the Archive and Special Collection is almost completely finished, therefore you can easily search these collections via the online catalogue.
Use of these collections is supervised by the Librarian, to book a slot please email library@rusi.org.
Pamphlet collection
The Librarian and volunteers have been extremely busy organising and cataloguing RUSI’s extensive collection of pamphlets and ephemera.
Many of the pamphlets have required re-stitching, cleaning and boxing. Whilst this project is on-going a selection of these fascinating items can already be accessed via the catalogued. We hope to finish this project completely by the end of 2014.
