Joint RUSI/St Anthony's Research Programme: “Intelligence and the Sociology of Terrorism”
The Pluscarden Programme for the Study of Global Terrorism and Intelligence (PP) of St Antony's College and the Homeland Security and Resilience Department (HSRD) of RUSI announce a joint Research Programme titled “Intelligence and the Sociology of Terrorism” (IST).
IST will run through the Academic Year 2006/7. The programme will consist of:
1. A series of seminars in London and Oxford.
2. A Prize Essay Competition, for entrants under the age of 30 on 31 October 2006.
3. A Joint Workshop, to be held at St Antony's College on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th December 2006.
4. A Published Volume, to be produced during 2007, containing the edited (expanded) proceedings of the Workshop.
Seminars
The programme of IST-related Seminars at RUSI and St Antony's will be announced individually by the relevant establishment. At St Antony's, the first IST seminar will take place on Thursday 26th October, when Professor Philip Bobbitt (University of Texas) will examine new approaches to global terrorism. At RUSI, the first IST lecture will be held on 3rd November, entitled: Understanding suicide terrorism.
Prize Essay Competition
We invite entries now for an essay competition, to be submitted by anyone of any nationality under the age of 30 on 31st October 2006. Conditions are:
Title: “The Sociology of Terrorism”.
Length: Up to 3000 words of original composition.
Submission: To sandrab@rusi.org by 31st October 2006, with evidence of age.
Adjudication: A panel of 3 Academics
Prize: 1 year's free subscription to RUSI/Jane's “Monitor”; 12 months' membership of RUSI; consideration for participation in the IST Joint Workshop; consideration for publication in the subsequent IST volume.
IST Joint Workshop
High grade speakers have already been invited to speak at the IST Joint Workshop at St Antony's College on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th December. There will be a formal dinner on the Friday night, with a VIP speaker. Themes to be covered at the Workshop are:

Session 3: Practical limits to a counter-terrorism programme
Session 4: The sociology of terrorism
Session 5: Islam in UK society
Session 6: Education and radicalisation

Saturday 9th December
Session 8: Terrorists & criminals – a common cause?
Session 9: Immigration & asylum – the extremist subculture
Session 10: The Islamic community – sociology & societal issues
Session 11: Keeping up with the pace – a view from Whitehall
Session 12: Propaganda & counter-propaganda
Session 13: Myths & realities of terrorist finance
The programme will finish at 1630hrs. Registration for the strictly limited places available at St Antony's will be invited in due course when we publish the full programme. There will be concessionary rates for members of RUSI or of Congregation of the University of Oxford, for full-time students of the University of Oxford, and for other students.
Published Volume
During 2007 an editorial board will produce a volume containing work expanded from material exposed during the IST Workshop and other relevant items. This volume will be published under RUSI arrangements.
