Geoff Clarkson, Dean Moore and David Thorndycraft are part of QinetiQ’s Air Vehicle Integration (AVI) Group. Geoff Clarkson is a Technical Manager and has more than 20 years’ experience of cockpit and avionic systems on fixed and rotary wing platforms; Dean Moore is a Senior Systems Engineer and has led flight trials of day/night, all-environment (DNAE) technologies as part of UK MoD research and technology demonstrator programmes; and David Thorndycraft is a Senior System Research Scientist and has worked on DNAE technologies for helicopters for over 10 years. Here they describe the requirement for providing helicopter crews with better situation awareness in low light levels and ‘brown-out’, and their belief that a deployable solution may not be far away. Â
