HRH The Duke of York attended the security round-table discussion between RUSI and Vietnam’s Institute for Defence and International Relations (IDIR) which took place at the Ministry of Defence Palace in Hanoi during the afternoon of Monday, 23 September 2013.

Prince Andrew, who attended in his capacity as member of RUSI’s International Advisory Board, hailed the commitment of the British and Vietnamese governments to broaden and deepen the security dialogue between the two nations. In his opening remarks at the round-table, His Royal Highness also urged the two institutes to identify topics on which they can expand their joint research activities.

Major General Dr Vu Tien Trong, IDIR’s Director, welcomed this opportunity and pledged to conclude very shortly a memorandum of understanding with RUSI which will provide for a more permanent basis of cooperation.

The round-table discussions concentrated on the whole gamut of Asian security matters, as well as more specific maritime questions. Dr Jonathan Eyal, RUSI’s International Director and Dr Euan Graham, Associate Fellow, led the discussions on behalf of the Institute. The British Ambassador to Hanoi, His Excellency Dr Anthony Stokes, as well as other senior members of the Embassy also attended.
