Biography

Dr Andrew Salerno-Garthwaite is a former senior defence reporter and the Digital Editor for RUSI's Newsbrief and Commentary. 

He has worked in media across a variety of outlets since 2018, including the Financial Times, Conde Nast and GlobalData. His defence coverage addressed operational and strategic issues arising in all domains.

In 2020 Dr Salerno-Garthwaite was Highly Commended for Statistical Excellence in Journalism by the Royal Statistical Society, within the Investigative Journalism award category, for work at the Financial Times.

He holds a Masters degree and Doctorate in Statistics, and an Undergraduate degree in Development Studies. 

Dr Salerno-Garthwaite's research interests in statistics have included time-series modelling in rainfall and flooding with the University of Greenwich, statistical shape analysis of facial expressions with stochastic processes while studying at the University of Kent, and work in causal analysis with Mendelian randomisation using genome-wide association studies for the University of Cambridge Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit.
