Roy Maconachie
Roy Maconachie is Professor of Natural Resources and Development in the Department of Social and Policy Sciences at the University of Bath. His research in Sub-Saharan Africa explores the social, political and economic aspects of food production and natural resource management, and their relationships to wider societal change. He has been carrying out field-based research in Africa for the past 24 years, with much of his work focusing on the extractive industries, livelihood change and social conflict. Roy’s recent research has examined the role that artisanal mining plays in ‘green energy transitions’, exploring key governance challenges in critical mineral supply chains in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and he has produced five award winning documentary films. Roy has also undertaken consultancy work for a wide range of organisations, including the World Bank, the United Nations, the Natural Resource Governance Institute, GIZ, and the UK Department for International Development. Roy holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Sussex (2004), and held previous post-doctoral fellowships at IDPM, University of Manchester (2007-2009) and IDS Sussex (2005-2007).
