Vice Admiral Sir Clive Johnstone KBE CB
Distinguished FellowThe Institute records with sorrow the death of Vice Admiral Sir Clive Johnstone KBE CB.
Sir Clive retired from the Royal Navy as a Vice Admiral in 2019. His last role was as the Commander of NATO’s Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM). A role that reflected the strength of alliance resolve, and one that reinforced the defining theme of his military leadership, which has been the projection of a considered maritime voice into the National and NATO defence and security debate, linking across boundaries with partners of all forms, friends, and allies.
Since 2019, Sir Clive has come to understand the interaction of commerce with the sea through his role as the corporate Head of Strategy for BMT Global Ltd, an engineering and design consultancy.
Alongside his role as Distinguished Fellow at RUSI, he is also the Chairman of Trustees of the Naval Review and a member of the GLOBSEC NATO Advisory Council.
Passionate about nurturing talent and a champion for diversity, Sir Clive supports various organisations including Maritime UK, Durham University, and the Windsor Leadership Trust.
Sir Clive regularly speaks at different fora around the world on leadership, maritime issues and maritime security.
