Alexander Babuta

Biography

Alexander Babuta was a Research Fellow at RUSI before leaving in February 2021 to take up the position of AI Futures Lead at the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation. His research covers a range of areas relating to national security, intelligence policy, digital policing and emerging technologies.

He is an Associate Fellow at the University of Bristol, a Research Associate at the National Centre for Gang Research (University of West London), a Member of the Essex Centre for Data Analytics Data Ethics Committee, and a SPRITE+ Expert Fellow (Security, Privacy, Identity and Trust Engagement Network). In 2019/20, he was lead researcher for RUSI’s GCHQ-sponsored project on Artificial Intelligence and National Security.

He is currently studying for a Doctorate in Criminology, critically assessing data-driven approaches to violence risk assessment. He holds an MSc with Distinction in Crime Science from University College London (UCL), where his dissertation explored the use of data science methods for police risk assessment of missing children. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from UCL.
