Awarded the military cross for his service in Italy during the Second World War, he was later Chichele Professor of the History of War at Oxford, Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford, Robert A Lovett Professor of Military and Naval History at Yale University. He also founded the Department of War Studies at King’s College London.
