On 8 March 2023, Belarusian opposition leader, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, gave a speech to RUSI members and attending media arguing strongly that freedom for Belarus and Ukraine are interchangeable and mutually dependent.

Since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine a year ago, the support offered by the current Belarusian regime has been critical in enabling Russian aggression.

Sharing a vision for a free and democratic Belarus, Ms Tsikhanouskaya emphasised the significance of Belarus for Europe’s security, described the present-day political realities of the country and outlined how her office, the United Transitional Cabinet and the Belarusian people are resisting Russian aggression.

quote
I’m convinced that democracy in Belarus is one of the cornerstones of the future security of Europe. I firmly believe in Ukraine’s victory and I think that it will open the window of opportunity for a political change in Belarus.
