Admiral Sir Keith Blount Delivers RUSI’s 2024 Gallipoli Memorial Lecture

Admiral Sir Keith Blount, Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, NATO, gives this year's Gallipoli Lecture

Admiral Sir Keith Blount KCB OBE, NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, delivered RUSI’s annual Gallipoli Memorial Lecture.

Addressing an audience of RUSI members and the media in the Institute’s Sir Naim Dangoor Hall, Admiral Sir Keith reflected on the ways in which NATO has developed and adapted its capabilities and posture since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Held since 2001, the annual Gallipoli Memorial Lecture aims to illustrate how the contribution and sacrifices of Australian and New Zealand forces more than a century ago can inspire countries today to use their military instruments to best effectiveness.

Admiral Sir Keith drew on UK and allied experiences from the Gallipoli campaign to reflect on lessons for contemporary conflict, particularly the imperative of Ukraine’s western allies providing robust and consistent support for its defence against Russia.

During his address, Admiral Sir Keith said:

Ukraine cannot fail. It will take continued commitment and resolve across every line of diplomatic, economic and military support. This is a test for those united by shared values and a belief in the rules-based international order.Ukraine will continue to need help and NATO must continue to deter and, if necessary, defend against those who challenge and threaten the way we live. NATO in an Alliance which is reinvented, reinvigorated and stronger than before… with a laser focus on achieving the right outcome for Ukraine and the one billion citizens it serves.
