The Royal United Services Institute has received a gift of £2500 from The Patron’s Fund, the charitable fund set up to acknowledge the work of the charitable organisations for which Her Majesty, The Queen acts as a Patron, on the occasion of her 90th birthday.
The gift will go towards RUSI’s preservation and digitisation of vital and historic documents in our Library of Military History. The RUSI library is a unique collection of national historical and cultural importance, dedicated to developing the knowledge of war and shaping theoretical approaches to modern military thinking. The programme of digitising historically significant collections enabled by the gift will allow us to fill fundamental gaps in knowledge and provide historians and other professionals interested in this heritage with an electronic platform to consult documents which are otherwise too fragile to handle.
The Patron’s Fund has distributed gifts between nearly 300 charities and other organisations in the UK and the Commonwealth. The Fund received generous donations from a range of supporters; including individual donors, businesses, schools, community groups and the proceeds from The Patron’s Lunch, the event on the Mall last June.
RUSI is the world’s oldest defence and security think tank, founded in 1831 by the Duke of Wellington, with a historic purpose to promote and advance naval and military science and literature. Today, RUSI’s remit now includes a range of research activities on core national and international defence and security issues, as well as careful curation of its rich heritage and legacy.
