The reaction to surprise appointment of Grant Shapps as Defence Secretary

Reacting to the Mr Shapps' appointment, Professor Michael Clarke, a former director of the think tank RUSI, told the BBC: "It was always going to be a caretaker appointment from now until the election. Shapps is a great caretaker. Six months in Energy, three months in Business and three days as Home Secretary. We don't really know how good he is at running the big departments, but we'll find out."
