Professor Malcolm Chalmers, deputy director of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), says there was “serious concern” during this era that Corbyn could create a defence “crisis” if he came to power. “Corbyn’s position was very different from the long-held cross-party consensus on defence policy, which has really been in place since World War Two,” he says. “It contributed to the perception he was unreliable on issues of national security.”
