“They [Al-Qaeda] split.. from ISIL in 2014 over theological differences and other issues, such as ISIL wanting to establish a physical Caliphate, while Al-Qaeda didn’t think the time was right. Also, Al Qaeda thought ISIL was being too brutal. I think Hamza had been careful not to criticise ISIL too much because he was hoping for some sort of reconciliation.”
