The Demise of the LTTE


One of the world’s longest running insurgencies came to an end in May when the Sri Lankan government overran the last remaining holdouts of the Tamil Tiger rebels and killed the much-feared LTTE supremo, Velupillai Prabhakaran. The same conjunction of global forces that enabled the government to turn the corner, however, could make the victory costly if it does not show restraint towards the defeated opponent.
