Covert Interference and the UK Foreign Influence Registration Scheme
Tristan Yip
9 January 2025Long Read
Lessons from other foreign registration schemes show why and how the UK’s new Foreign Influence Registration Scheme should be implemented.
Covert foreign influence, particularly from China, poses a serious and inadequately addressed threat to the integrity of UK politics. The UK’s new Foreign Influence Registration Scheme should be a core part of the new Labour government’s response to countering foreign interference, yet it remains unimplemented. Tristan Yip draws lessons from registration schemes in Australia and the US, and calls for immediate action to launch the UK’s scheme.
