The ceremony for the 2014 Duke of Westminster Medal for Military Literature, RUSI's presitgious literary award.

Duke of Westminster AwardSince our foundation RUSI has consistently been at the heart of military academic research and literature and it was in 1997, with the support of The Duke of Westminster that the Medal for Military Literature was created.

RUSI is delighted to announce that the 2014 Duke of Westminster Medal will be awarded to Rana Mitter for his book China’s War with Japan 1937-1945: The Struggle for Survival, (Penguin).

The award ceremony for the 2014 Duke of Westminster Medal for Military Literature will be held on 9th April at 61 Whitehall. The event will include the ceremony itself and a historical lecture by Rana Mitter on China's contribution to the Allied cause during the Second World War.

The shortlist for this year’s award included:

  • Margaret MacMillan, The War that Ended Peace: How Europe Abandoned Peace for the First World Ward (Profile Books).
  • Eric Schlosser, Command and Control (Allan Lane).
  • Rana Mitter, Chinas War with Japan 1937=-1945: The Struggle for Survival, (Penguin)
  • Roger Knight, Britain Against Napolean: The Organization of Victory (Penguin)
  • Richard Overy, The Bombing War: Europe, 1939-1945 (Penguin)
  • Sir Lawrence Freedman, Strategy: A History (Oxford University Press)

The award is bestowed annually for the best book in the English language by a living author, regardless of nationality, gender or age, which represents in the opinion of the Awarding Board a notable and original contribution to the study of international or national security, or the military professions. Previous winners of the medal include: Hew Strachan, N.A.M. Rodger, John Keegan, Marrack Goulding, Percy Cradock, Sir Lawrence Freedman and Professor Roger Knight.
