RUSI Conference: The Future of the Warfighter: Armed Forces People in the Twenty-First Century
Whilst much academic attention has been paid to ideas such as the Whole Force Concept and the Defence Enterprise, with the notable exception of the Armed Forces Covenant there appears to have been less interest in the future for military personnel. Within the services themselves, there is a philosophy of promotion as the single recognition and reward, yet this is relatively new and is counter to the historical experiences of the British Armed Forces in peacetime. Notwithstanding this there are regular conversations within the Ministry of Defence about recruitment, retention, new ways of working and future skills. This RUSI conference will seek to open the conversation around these themes and to identify areas where further research is needed, and what models might be useful comparisons.
Themes covered include:
- What does the future warfighter look like? What sort of skills and capabiltiies will be required, and how will the requirement change as robotics in the workforce become normalised?
- Should the Defence industry and the Armed Forces play a role in developing required skills before recruitment?
- How to recruit the future warfighter: do the next generarion of recruitment targets need a different offer, and what might this look like? Are there lessons to be learned from those European countries which still employ conscription?
- How to retain the warfighter: what are the factors that contribute to service personnel deciding to leave early or to extend and what are the levers that can be applied to control these flows?
