Duke of Westminster's Medal for Military Literature

17 October 2006, 11:15 to 14:30
Westminster Medal Small

The winner of the 2006 Duke of Westminster's Medal for Military Literature is Professor Roger Knight for his book The Pursuit of Victory: The Life and Achievement of Horatio Nelson, published by Penguin Books Ltd.

The Pursuit of Victory

Roger Knight's purpose in this new biography is to explain how Nelson achieved such extraordinary success. Knight places him firmly in the context of the Royal Navy at the time; he analyses Nelson's more obvious leadership qualities, as well as his relationships with the officers around him. The biography takes an impartial, judicious look at Nelson's status as a hero, and demolishes many of the myths established by the early authors, and repeated by their modern successors. The conclusion which emerges is of a shrewd political operator who charmed and impressed political leaders and whose advancement was helped by the relatively weak generation of admirals above him.

The author is one of Britain’s foremost experts on naval history and a renowned Nelson scholar. He was the Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the National Maritime Museum from 1988 to 2000 and is now Visiting Professor of Naval History at the Greenwich Maritime Institute. The winner will deliver a lecture based on his book and the medal will be presented by His Grace, The Duke of Westminster

Created with the support of The Duke of Westminster, the Medal is bestowed yearly for the best book in the English language, regardless of nationality, gender or age of the author, which represents in the opinion of the Awarding Board a notable and original contribution to the study of international or national security, or the military professions. Previous winners of the medal include: Hew Strachan, N.A.M. Rodger, John Keegan, Marrack Goulding and Percy Cradock.
