International Women's Day 2020 at RUSI

News, 28 February 2020
We are marking International Women’s Day this year by hosting two events and highlighting the role of women in defence.

WOMEN IN DEFENCE

EVENTS

This year, RUSI celebrates International Women's Day with two events: the first marks the  20th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, and the second looks at the role of women in intelligence throughout history.

These events will collectively look at the roles that women have played in international affairs, defence and security – traditionally male dominated fields – in bringing about critical change. Bringing together policy makers, academics, defence personnel and media, they will discuss the landmark achievements of women in international peace and security, the challenges that still need to be met to achieve gender equity and the future insights that women continue to contribute to addressing the most complex global issues.

Speakers will include:

  • Sonia Purnell, journalist and author
  • Nadine Akkerman, Senior Lecturer/Reader in early modern English literature, University of Leiden
  • Claire Hubbard-Hall, Senior Lecturer in History, Bishop Grosseteste University
  • Baroness Mary Goudie, British House of Lords
  • Dr. Joana Cook, Senior Research Fellow at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation
  • Sabin Khan, Senior Associate Fellow at RUSI
  • Rahama Baloni, Nigerian Lawyer and Program Management Professional at Mercy Corps.
  • Lt. Col. Rachel Grimes, Ministry of Defence
