RUSI Director on the future direction of British forces

New Statesman Jan 09Professor Michael Clarke was part of a high level roundtable that discussed the role of British Armed Forces in complementing the UK’s foreign policy and international development agenda. The roundtable, hosted by the New Statesman magazine considered how these benefits can be sustained and enhanced over time.

Professor Clarke highlighted the role of British forces in Afghanistan. He said: 'I think Afghanistan is the right war but we are in the wrong place for the right war. We should not be in Helmand. What matters is Kandahar.'

The proceeding of this roundtable was recorded in a special supplement appearing in the 19 January 2009 issue of the New Statesman.
