RUSI is undertaking a project with the European Union to strengthen societal and individual resilience to violent extremism in Kenya and Somalia.

Strengthening Resilience against Violent Extremism in the Horn of Africa (STRIVE), is a research project to better understand the violent extremist environment.

The project tested different types of projects including inter and intra-faith relationship-building; community media support; training of law enforcement; activities for young Somaliland diaspora; and youth mentorship.

STRIVE tracked and responded to the unfolding story of violent extremism in Kenya over the programme period which contributed towards more specific recommendations. It focused effort on locations where reported recruitment into violent extremist organisations was highest.

Towards the conclusion of the pilot programme it became clear that there were three groups of lessons most relevant to the CVE community. First are lessons relevant to designing and implementing CVE programming. Second, are lessons which resulted from pilot interventions with the youth, and third, a training programme involving Kenyan law enforcement agencies.
