Dr Joanna Spear

Dr Spear is a Senior Associate Fellow of RUSI and was previously a Visiting Research Fellow on sabbatical from the George Washington University, where she is an associate professor of International Affairs and director of the Elliott School's Security Policy Studies Program.

At George Washington University she was the founding director of the National Security Studies Program, an executive education programme serving the needs of the Department of Defense and other federal agencies.

Dr Spear was previously director of the Graduate Research Programme and a senior lecturer at the Department of War Studies, King's College, London. In addition, she has been a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and a visiting scholar at the Brookings Institution (Washington, DC) and at the Institute for Defence and Security Analyses (New Delhi).

Dr Spear is the co-editor, with Dr Paul Williams, of Security and Development in Global Politics: A Critical Comparison (Georgetown University Press, 2012). She is the author of Carter and Arms Sales: Implementing the Carter Administration's Arms Transfer Restraint Policy (Macmillan, 1995) and is currently working on a book on the defence trade, provisionally entitled State-Firm Relations in the Contemporary Defence Trade

She has written numerous articles and chapters in books on subjects such as the international defence trade, arms control, disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR), post-conflict reconstruction and development.
