Associate Fellow

Simon Chelton is an Associate Fellow at RUSI. He previously spent thirty-three years in the Royal Navy as a logistics officer, with service in ships and submarines.

In addition to operational service, he spent time on the Ministry of Defence's policy staffs and in senior officer education, both as directing staff at the Joint Services Command and Staff College and as deputy director of the Defence Leadership and Management Centre.

He also qualified as a Japanese interpreter, graduated from the one-year General Course at the National Institute of Defence Studies in 1995 and served as defence attaché in Tokyo from 2003-07.

He left the Royal Navy in 2009 to help BAE Systems create a strategic approach to the Japanese defence market, and was then regional vice president for business development in north east Asia. In 2012 he left to create his own consultancy which supports newly emerging initiatives for collaboration in equipment development between the UK and Japan.

A long term student of Japanese defence and defence industrial policy, he has written on Japan's and wider east Asian security issues, particularly Japan's emerging multilateral approach to security, both for RUSI and elsewhere.
