Biography

Sir John Scarlett was appointed as a RUSI Distinguished Fellow in July 2021, having been RUSI Vice-Chair since 2016. 

Sir John served as Chief of the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS or MI6) from 2004 to 2009. He joined SIS in 1971 and over the next 20 years served in Nairobi, Paris and twice in Moscow as well as several assignments in London. Sir John was appointed Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) in September 2001. On 01 August 2004, Sir John rejoined SIS as its Chief.   

Sir John’s current roles include Chairman, SC Strategy Ltd; Director, Times Newspaper Holdings; Co-Chair of the Global Advisory Council, Wilson Center, Washington DC; Vice-President of the UK Association de la Legion d’Honneur; Trustee of the French Institute in the United Kingdom and Trustee of the Royal Medical Foundation of Epsom College.
