Duncan Depledge

Duncan Depledge is an Associate Fellow of RUSI, where previously worked on the Climate Change and Security Programme. In this role, he focused primarily on analysing how climate change is impacting global and regional dynamics of security and geopolitics, especially in the Arctic.

Duncan’s doctoral research, undertaken at Royal Holloway with support from RUSI (2010-14), focused on the changing geopolitics of the Arctic with a specific interest in emerging British policy toward the region.

In 2012 he spent time as a guest researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies and the Norwegian Institute for International Affairs in Oslo, Norway. Duncan was also an associated individual with the Norwegian-led Geopolitics in the High North Programme from 2011-2012 (www.geopoliticsnorth.org).

Duncan’s writing on British Arctic policy has featured in the RUSI Journal, International Affairs, The Polar Journal and The Arctic Yearbook, as well as the recent edited collection Polar Geopolitics? Knowledges, Resources and Legal Regimes (Edward Elgar 2014).

He holds a BA in History and an MA in Political Theory from the University of Sheffield. He also holds an MPhil in Geographical Research from the University of Cambridge for which he was awarded a distinction. Duncan completed his doctoral programme in November 2014.
