The nature and breadth of threats to the energy systems which underpin advanced economies is changing rapidly. The energy transition adds new dimensions to the strategic advantage in technology as well as the economic projection of power.
Established markets for fossil fuels may be disrupted and net zero creates new time pressures for hydrocarbons producers. Countries across the world need access to new technologies which will underpin economic and technological advantage, and the raw materials and industrial capacity to produce or import them.
Changes to the energy system touch nearly all aspects of life in advanced economies and the aspirations of developing countries and the ways in which this will disrupt the global balance of power and the risks that must be managed to maintain global influence need to be understood and managed.
This project investigates the impact of net zero technologies on UK national security through their impact on hydrocarbons reliance and emerging technology supply chains.
